Hank enjoys the quiet life. As the night custodian of the public library, his evenings are sequestered in the methodical routine of work. An impeccably organized man, Hank thrives on the absence of mystery in his life. One day, his pattern faces disruption as he is forced to deal with the sudden appearance of a strange bequest.
This bequest arrives in the form of an elderly woman from Norway. The lone surviving member of this lineage, Hank must simultaneously learn how to be a caretaker for someone other than himself, while trying to understand how this mysterious woman fits within his family tree. In the process, Hank must step out of his routine and gradually understand that some mysteries in life are meant to be just that, mysterious.

Filming in October 2010, Welcoming Departure is the first feature film by Scott Ballard (Between Night, 2009; Winner Best of Fest, Projections Film Festival; Winner Audience Choice, Indie Spirit Film Festival.) The film will be shot over 25 days in Bellingham, Washington and Portland, Oregon.

Currently, the film is still in the second fundraising phase, though the financial goals of the production are very close to being met.
